In Nigeria 40-50% of fresh fruit and vegetables (FFV) are lost during postharvest periods, between the farm gate and the final consumer. Billions of Naira are lost each year due to inefficient and inadequate cold chain system of storage and transport, amongst other factors such as improper crating methods, poor infrastructure, lack of cool/cold storage technologies, poor handling education at the farm, food safety issues, and so on.
